Fire Damage: Melted Walls and Broken Hearts

Fire damage affects more than just the wood and paper it burns. Somewhere in the blackened husks of the gutted rooms, amid the melted, twisted glass and the rubble that litters the floor are the remnants of a home. All of your belongings are there, somewhere in that mess. All of your personal memories and the things that you held so dear- gone forever in the heat of the blaze. Even worse are the things that still hint at what they once were. You can recognize them, but know that they will never be right again.

As a result of fire damage, your walls are twisted, the paint bubbled and peeling, or the paper melted and falling off. You know that you will have to scrape and repaint at the very least, but first the rooms will have to be rebuilt. Dealing with fire damage is time consuming and expensive, but necessary. Your walls will be rebuilt and your life will eventually come back to normal. All of the things that you have lost in the fire are gone, but you can make new memories in a matter of time. Fire damage can do more than destroy the structures; the things that make a house a home are now gone.

If you still have family members, you should be able to get at least some of the pictures that were lost in the fire- there are online sites now that allow you to upload photos and documents as well. These sites are worth looking into, especially if you take a lot of pictures of family events. Most sites are free or inexpensive and well worth investigating. Another option would be to make copies of your photos and put them in storage or in a safe deposit box.

Some items may be saved- especially those that are in rooms farther away from the fire. Some minor smoke or water damage may be repaired, but outright fire damage may spell the ruin of your possessions. Some items that look perfectly okay may actually be unsafe or damaged in ways not visible to the naked eye, so inspect each of your possessions carefully.

Fire damage can be hard to deal with, and trying to deal with the restoration and repair process can be heartbreaking. Realizing that you cannot save some of your favorite things may be even worse. Family heirlooms and antiques may well be insured, but does a little bit of money really ease the pain of losing something that has been in your family for years? One-of-a-kind items, especially those that were handmade cannot be restored or recreated and will hurt the worst to lose. But becoming a victim of fire is a real possibility in our lives, and while there are ways to minimize your risks, you can not completely eliminate them. Do you store all of your belongings in what you consider a safer place and never get to enjoy them, or do you place them in your home and cherish them the best that you can?
